1. Failed Power Steering Pump - Electric power steering pumps are usually prone to failure. If your power steering pump needs to be replaced it is probably a good idea to check to see if the cooling fan or other related components need to be replaced while the vehicle is disassembled.
2. Clutch Failure - early clutch failures seem to hard use.
3. Transmission issues - Problems with automstic transmissions tend to arise when manufactures claim that thier transmissions do not need fluid changes. This is mechanically unsound as all moving parts will eventually need to have the fluids changed. Not changing the fluid in your transmission will cause it to fail. If you changed to the transmission fluid every 30 to 40 thousand miles you would save yourself thousands of dollars in repair costs. The CVT transmissions installed before 2008 should have regular oil changes; however the 5 speed automatic transmissions used on most minis are a lot more reliable.
4. Rattling timing chains - Timing chains can eventually come loose and start to rattle. You may notice the while idling the rattling is worse. This is a fairly major repair and if left unserviced it will become worse and lead to much more damage. However this problem has been associated to not changing the transmission oil or fluid frequently enough.
5. Water Pump and Thermostat Housing Leak - If your Mini Cooper has over 50,000 miles it should about that time to change out the thermostat and the water pump. Hundreds of dollars in labor can be saved if you replace them before they spring a leak.
6. performance issues related to variable valve timing (VVT) - This problem can happen when the oil is not changed frequently enough. The VVT needs a sufficient flow of oil to operate optimally. When the oil is not changed sludge builds up and evetually clogs and backs up the tiny passages. If this ends up happening it is recommended that you try to change the oil in an attempt try to have the detergent in the oil clean the oil supply passages. To prevent the problem change the oil as soon as it gets dirty, even if only after a couple thousand miles. If done before the passages are completely blocked this might be all you need to do.
7. Damaged Front Radiator Support - The radiator suport is made up of plastic. It supports the radiator as well as the fan and the condenser. It does not take very much to damage the support especially since it sits very low. Running into a curb at a moderate speed would cause enough damage to warrant replacement. The low hose on the radiator sits even lower then the support. If you hit something while driving over it it can cause a considerable amount of damage. Be sure to exercise caution when parking your vehicle. With all that said, do not let this list scare you. Mini Coopers are the most expensive cars to buy new and to have serviced regularly. Depending on how hard you drive your vehicle, these cars are designed to last a long time. Mini Coopers cost of maintainence are in line with the cost of other performance vehicles.
